Giuseppe Santomaso, 1957 - 1964
Past exhibition
Overview
The artistic research of Giuseppe Santomaso, between 1957 and 1958, is signed by an important passage «from forms [...] to the syntology of the fresco, in other words to that personal and mature ‘informal’ through which the artist presented himself at the greatest European and international exhibitions, qualifying himself as one of the Italian protagonists (with Afro, Burri, Fontana and Vedova) of the contemporary scene» (N. Stringa, Giuseppe Santomaso. Catalogo generale, 2017, p. 67).
Unlike the works of the previous period, there is no longer a linear or concentric progression of the sign, but rather a pictorial clash in which many forces are at work on the canvas. The title of this work, “Passo Doppio” (Double Step), fits in with the artist’s tendency to prefer titles that do not delimit the work’s space, but are aimed at inserting them into a larger pictorial cycle: at times they are allusions of an odeporic nature, at times references to musical structures, and in other cases «analogical-sound-architectural» hints.
